FCC Chairman Speaks On Spectrum, Regulation

The chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Michael K. Powell, speaking at CTIA Wireless 2002 in Orlando, warned wireless phone companies yesterday to expect a long battle for additional airwave channels. Powell also said that because wireless phones have grown from a premium service to one millions of Americans rely on daily, the industry will face tougher demands to provide better service and more reliable access for public-safety purposes. Industry leaders said they need more spectrum soon to ensure adequate airwaves to cover future demand for phone calls and high-speed data services.
