The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) has approved its own version of Bluetooth technology for short-range wireless networks, the organization said today. The IEEE is an international body that sets the standards for a range of electrical and electronic systems. The new standard, known as 802.15.1, is fully compatible with the existing Bluetooth 1.1 standard. The IEEE approval paves the way for wider acceptance of Bluetooth, designed as a replacement for cables and wires between devices.
