Cingular Interested in VoiceStream Merger

Cingular CEO Stephen Carter hinted in an interview on Thursday that he would welcome a merger with Deutsche Telekom's VoiceStream, though he refused to comment directly on a possible deal. Since Cingular, VoiceStream and AT&T Wireless all use the same GSM technology, a union between any two of these companies has long been seen as a natural fit. However, a deal between Cingular and AT&T could cause anti-trust concerns, making it unlikely. AT&T and VoiceStream, have themselves held discussions about a possible union. But these talks have yet to produce a formal proposal and Cingular has greater need for VoiceStream's spectrum than AT&T does, making it a more likely buyer, according to analysts at Bear Stearns.
