Worldcom Customers to be Transferred

WorldCom yesterday announced it is set to transfer its almost 2 million wireless phone subscribers to other carriers. In August, the company will begin notifying its wireless customers via mail that they will be transferred either to AT&T Wireless, Verizon Wireless, Alltel or a fourth yet-to-be-named carrier. Meanwhile, Cingular Wireless has about 400,000 WorldCom resale customers using its network. A spokesman says the carrier already has sent a text message to some WorldCom customers prompting them to switch to Cingular, but the carrier does not have a formal deal with WorldCom. The transfer will save financially troubled WorldCom about $700 million a year.
