A handful of startups are taking aim at Nextel's dominance in the so called push-to-talk communications sector. On Monday, Sonim Technologies announced that it has become the latest such startup to receive venture backing. Other startups developing similar push-to-talk technology include Dynamicsoft, Spatial Wireless, and Winphoira Networks. Push-to-talk software is the first service Winphoria has sold to a carrier, with industry speculation pointing to Sprint as the customer. Push-to-talk allows cell phone users to instantly converse with each other without dialing or waiting. Until now, the service has been dominated by Nextel.
