Texas Instruments (TI) is gearing up to combine all four basic mobile phone functions onto one chip by 2004, CEO Thomas Engibous said today. TI said its processor will handle power management, radio baseband and software, radio frequency and memory. The single-chip solution will also contain 25 passive components. Current solutions typically require four chips and 180 passive components. TI's new chip will include Bluetooth, 802.11b, and GPS. Toward its single-chip goal, TI plans to offer a two-chip system in 2003.
