Royal Philips and Sony today announced that they will jointly develop a new near field wireless technology, dubbed "Near Field Communication" (NFC). The technology enables short-range (20cm) wireless communication between consumer devices held near each other. NFC technology will operate at 13.56 MHz and offer data speeds up to 212 kbit/s. Future NFC-enabled devices may include mobile phones, PDAs, laptops, and game consoles. The companies envision the technology being useful for services such as payment, ticketing, and accessing online entertainment content.
