Nokia Announces First WCDMA Phone

Nokia today announced its first 3G phone - the Nokia 6650. The 6650 uses the WCDMA/UMTS standard, and is fully 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) compliant. The phone features a large color display, MIDP Java, Bluetooth, and an integrated camera that can capture video clips up to 20 seconds. For roaming, the phone also features GSM 900/1800 and GPRS. Deliveries for testing will begin in Q4, with the first commercial deliveries in the first half of 2003. Nokia had orginally announced plans to start shipping its first 3G phone in the third quarter, and today's launch was originally scheduled to coincide with the launch of the first European 3G network by Finnish operator Sonera. Nokia later announced delays in shipping its first 3G phone, and Sonera in August postponed its 3G launch until 2003, blaming lack of handsets.
