Nextel Outlines Nationwide Direct Connect Rollout

Nextel and Motorola announced today that plans to launch Nextel's Nationwide Direct Connectâ„¢ service are on track. The yearlong rollout of the service will commence in Q4 2002, with phase one service offered in New York and Boston. The service will be launched in several other cities by the end of the year, with complete implementation of coast-to-coast Direct Connect service expected to be available by mid-year 2003. Direct Connect is Nextel's long-range digital walkie-talkie feature, which allows Nextel customers to communicate instantly, with sub-second call set-up. The service curently works only within local home calling areas.
