AT&T Wireless Puts WCDMA On Back Burner

AT&T Wireless said yesterday it was seeing no demand for WCDMA, and will use the next four to five years to evaluate the technology. WCDMA, also known as UMTS, provides advanced high-speed data services, but has been slow to take off in Japan and Europe. AT&T is on track to upgrade to the intermediate EDGE standard next year, and is starting a trial of WCDMA service in Dallas later this year. However, the company plans to stay with EDGE until it sees demand for higher speed data. A spokesman said the company would likely roll out WCDMA first in big cities like New York and Los Angeles when it is ready to launch it.
