Royal Philips Electronics and Cingular Wireless yesterday announced a successful commercial network field trial of single antenna interference cancellation (SAIC) chips for next generation GSM/GPRS mobile phones. This new technology improves voice quality, increases data speeds and increases network capacity 20%. Efficiency is expected to double when coupled with network synchronization technology. SAIC technology enables handsets to remove interference while efficiently focusing on the signals from the most appropriate base station. The technology will be part of Philips' chip solutions offered to handset manufacturers globally. The trial was performed using Cingular's GSM network in Georgia.
