FastMobile this week announced that it has successfully completed a voice walkie-talkie (push-to-talk) test between Chicago and London using two off-the-shelf Nokia Series 60 GSM phones. A FastMobile server in Chicago routed the digitized voice and text conversations across the GPRS networks of US operator T-Mobile, and UK operators Orange and Vodafone. No additional hardware was required on the phones or networks. By the second quarter of 2003, FastMobile plans to commercialize the walkie-talkie feature into its fastxt service, which the company is planning to bring to the US later this year.
