TI Reveals New OMAP, UMTS Chips

Texas Instruments (TI) today unveiled five new OMAP processors that increase performance up to 8x, while reducing standby current as much as 10x in wireless handsets and PDAs. The chips include hardware that can accelerate security functions up to 90x. Two of the chips include integrated GSM/GPRS class 12 radio hardware, and two chips include 256 megabits of stacked memory. Production volumes of the OMAP chips will be available fourth quarter 2003. TI today also announced a UMTS chipset and complete 3G phone reference design, including an OMAP procesor. Full-scale production of the UMTS chipset and software is planned for first half of 2004.
