Qualcomm today announced that it will conduct the world's first GSM1x technology trial with China Unicom. The trial will illustrate the feasibility of GSM1x technology to allow China Unicom's GSM subscribers to take advantage of enhanced CDMA2000 1X services, while preserving the existing GSM service layer and SIM-based subscription. The trial is also expected to accelerate the commercial availability of GSM/CDMA dual-mode handsets. The trial is being conducted in the Chinese city of Suzhou, and is scheduled to begin in the second quarter.
