Verizon Communications today published its sustainability report and has set some lofty goals for itself moving forward. Verizon wants to cut its carbon dioxide intensity by 50% by the year 2012. Carbon intensity is measured by the amount of energy needed to move data across Verizon's network. Verizon says it can improve this figure by upping the efficiency of data transiting its network, in effect sending more data per unit of energy. The company will use its 2009 carbon intensity as its benchmark for the 2020 goal. The company also plans to shift 15% of its fleet vehicles to alternate fuel sources by 2015. The company said that sustainability will play a key role in "delivering shareholder value" in the years to come. Verizon Communications is the parent company of Verizon Wireless, which is jointly owned by the U.K.'s Vodafone.
