Verizon Launches Ringback Tones In California

Verizon Wireless announced today it is the first national carrier to offer Ringback Tones - short clips of real music that replace the standard ring callers hear when they call the phone of a Ringback Tone subscriber. The service is available now for customers in Sacramento and southern California, with national availability planned for mid-2005. Customers can choose from an initial catalog of more than 2,200 songs in 13 different music genres. Set-up options include different ringback tones for different callers based on the Caller ID, Group List or the time of day. The service is priced at 99 cents per month, plus $1.99 annually for each tone.

No big deal. You can do this with Moto phones already and it does not incur a recurring charge. VZW just does not get it!

This is more for the caller than the one being called. When you call a VZW subscriber who has this feature, you hear a song instead of the ringing. Its through the provider, not the phone so Moto can't do it. Its still a pretty silly idea though, pay...

😕 Erm... no. You can't do this with a phone. It happens on the network side. Phones can't generate or determine ringback tones.

You guys on this site are so ridiculous. VZW constantly gets ridiculed for not initiating new products and services. But when they do something first, like the ringback option, everyone ridicules them for it. I guarantee it will make a lot of money...

Doesn't Tmobile already have caller tunes? How is it that Verizon is the first?
Verizon is the first CDMA provider to have it.
Technically, we haven't officially launched it yet although some of the info got out early... Official launch is expected before the end of the year.
