Bluetooth SIG Adopts GNSS Profile 1.0 for GPS Data Sharing

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group recently voted to adopt the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Profile v1.0. The GNSS profile, which can be used by all devices using Bluetooth 2.0 and up, lets GPS-enabled devices share positioning data with another nearby device via Bluetooth. The Bluetooth SIG explained in an email, "The GNSS profile specification defines the Serial Port Profile (SPP) based transport mechanism and associated service discovery record parameters needed to establish a service level connection between two devices." The end result will be an easier method of sharing GPS-derived location data between two Bluetooth devices, such as smartphones, tablets, or sensors. The profile may be downloaded by hardware/software makers from the Bluetooth SIG's web site.
