Corning today announced a new type of glass for smartphones, tablets, and other touch devices called Willow Glass. Willow Glass is light weight, thin, and flexible, according to Corning, and supports thinner backplanes and color filters for use with either OLED and LCD technologies. Willow Glass can also be wrapped around devices and structures, giving them the look of curved displays. Willow Glass can be processed at high temperatures to create strength and formed into panels as thin as 100 microns (about the thickness of a piece of paper). Willow Glass is sampling now to select vendors and Corning expects it to go into production later this year.
