AT&T to Block Stolen Phones Starting This Week

AT&T today confirmed that it plans to officially launch an initiative first announced earlier this year that will prevent stolen cell phones from working on its network. AT&T will open and maintain a database of stolen cell phones, partly in conjunction with the Federal Communications Commission. Using the database, AT&T will block devices reported as stolen from being reactivated on its network. Eventually, it will work with other carriers to block stolen devices. "As announced in April, AT&T is creating a stolen phone database to prevent devices reported stolen from accessing wireless networks," said AT&T spokesperson Mark Siegel in a statement sent to the New York Times. "We will install this availability for AT&T phones on our network and are working toward a cross-carrier solution later this year."
