RIM Socked with $147M Patent Judgment
Jul 14, 2012, 8:36 AM by Eric M. Zeman
A California court found Research In Motion guilty of infringing on a mobile device management patent held by a company called Mformation. Mformation sued RIM in 2008 over a patent that "remotely manages a wireless device over a wireless network." RIM argued the claim was invalid because RIM was already using the technology when Mformation filed for the patent. A jury didn't see it that way. RIM was directed to pay Mformation $8 for each BlackBerry smartphone connected to the company's BlackBerry Enterprise Server in the U.S. through the beginning of the trial. The total damages amounts to $147 million. RIM says it has "pending legal motions" that coud reverse the verdict.
