Wi-Fi Alliance and Wireless Gigabit Alliance to Merge

The Wi-Fi Alliance and Wireless Gigabit Alliance today announced plans to unify their efforts moving forward. They have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see the two organizations consolidate their activity and finances under the Wi-Fi Alliance name. The organizations feel that the progress made by the WiGig technology standard in recent years is a natural complement to Wi-Fi for short-range mobile broadband applications. They also believe the merger will lead to more efficient work on future short-range wireless broadband standards and technologies. The first Wi-Fi Alliance interoperability certification program for WiGig products is expected to launch by the end of 2013. The Wi-Fi Alliance and the WiGig Alliance expect to complete the transaction by the middle of the year.
