Nextel is extending their Push To Talk offering by adding the ability to create group walkie talkie sessions on the fly. Group Connect allows a caller to select up to 20 additional participants right from his handset and initiate a group chat; previously Push To Talk groups had to be predefined. The first handset capable of doing this is the i605, launched today. The i605 is also Nextel's first Motorola phone with Bluetooth. Nextel will announce additional handsets with the Group Connect feature soon. The new Group Connect is different from the previous regional Nextel service called "Group Connect", which has now been renamed "Talkgroup". The technology behind Group Connect is Motorola's Selective Dynamic Group Call (SDGC).
