MediaTek today announced the MT6572, a new system-on-a-chip that combines a mobile application processor and cellular baseband radio onto a single piece of silicon. The MT6572 features a dual-core Cortex A7 processor with speeds up to 1.2GHz and integrated Wi-Fi, FM, GPS, Bluetooth, and HSPA+/TD-SCDMA radios. The processor has enough horsepower to handle 3D graphics, 720p HD video playback/record, 5-megapixel cameras and displays that range up to 960x540 pixels (qHD). MediaTek envisions the MT6572 being an ideal solution for entry-level or low-cost smartphones. The chip is already in production, and MediaTek said it expects devices with the MT6572 inside to reach the market by June.
