ARM Intros Cortex A12 Chips for Mid-Range Devices

ARM today announced a new integrated processor that is meant to help it capitalize on the large market for mid-range devices. The chipset was designed to maximize power output and battery lie, while also minimizing size. The chipset includes the Cortex-A12 processor and Mali-T622 GPU, and brings along a new video IP chip called the Mali-V500. The Cortex A12 uses 28nm processes, supports big.LITTLE processing technology, and offers up to 40% more power than a comparable A9 chip. The Mali-T622 GPU conforms to the OpenGL ES 3.0 standard and delivers 50% better power management when compared to the first-generation Mali chip. Last, the Mali-V500 video chip brings dedicated processing for encode/decode, allowing a single-core processor to handle 1080p HD video at 60 frames per second, and multi-core processors to handle 4K ultra-HD video at up to 120 frames per second. Packaged together, ARM believes the new system-on-a-chip will offer mid-range devices premium performance. The Cortex A12 integrated processor will be available in devices by the middle of 2014.
