Verizon to Offer More NFL Games on Phones
Jun 5, 2013, 7:41 AM by Eric M. Zeman
Verizon Wireless has expanded its content deal with the National Football League to include the rights to air more games. Verizon and the NFL already stream games to Verizon smartphones on Sunday, Monday, and Thursday evenings. Under the terms of the new agreement, games that are played Sunday afternoons will also be available over the air. Specifically, Verizon customers will be able to watch games that are offered in their home market on Sundays. The deal includes the playoffs and the Super Bowl. The NFL app requires a $5 monthly subscription fee and works on smartphones, but not tablets. According to the Wall Street Journal the NFL and Verizon are developing an app that will be available to smartphones on other carriers, but Verizon is reserving premium features, including expanded highlights and statistics, for subscribers on its own network. Verizon will pay the NFL $1 billion over four years for the rights to air football games.
