Google Searches Mobile Web

Google is beta testing a new service that would allow phone users to search sites specifically formatted for mobile devices. The "mobile web" option will search for results on XHTML pages, as opposed to a standard "web" search which still looks for HTML pages, even when accessed from a phone. This makes clicking through to get more information an option for most phone users. This new option is now available to any user visiting Google's homepage from a mobile phone. Google also offers standard web, image and local searches through the same page.

New?
I also remember using Google's WAP page to search regular web pages as well.
But to my knowledge Google has not indexed WAP pages and made them searchable until now.
