Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa to Let All 8 CPUs Fire at Once

Samsung today announced a new development concerning its Exynos 5 Octa processor called Heterogeneous Multi-Processing (HMP) that will allow all eight cores to function at the same time. The Exynos 5 Octa uses a big.LITTLE set up with two banks of processors, one group of ARM Cortex A15s and another group of ARM Cortex A7s. According to Samsung, it has devised new software controls that can send high-intensity tasks to the A15 cores while at the same time sending low-intensity tasks to the A7 cores. The A15s draw more power than the A7s, so using the A7s for various functions can help save battery life. Before this new implementation was developed, the Exynos 5 Octa sent all processing tasks to either the A15s or the A7s, but didn't use both processor banks at the same time. Samsung expects that the HMP solution for the Exynos 5 Octa will be available during the fourth quarter.
