BlackBerry today announced massive job cuts amidst a large loss for its second fiscal quarter. The company expects to write down $1 billion in unsold Z10 smartphone inventory and post a loss of between $950 and $995 million. The company said it sold 3.7 million devices during its second fiscal quarter, but the bulk of them were its older BlackBerry 7 devices, and not its new BlackBerry 10 smartphones. As a result, it will layoff 40% of its global work force, or about 4,500 employees. After the cuts, BlackBerry will be left with 7,000 employees, about half what it was two years ago. Further, BlackBerry said it plans to make changes to its business. The company said it will "refocus on the enterprise and prosumer market." It will consolidate its hardware portfolio from six devices to four, including two high-end devices and two entry-level devices. BlackBerry announced earlier this month that it is exploring its strategic options, including a sale of the company, whether in parts or as a whole.

Are we seriously supposed to be surprised to learn

That people who are in the market for a new device tend to buy the cheapest, rather than the most expensive?

Blackberry customers are not Apple customers, they don't like to spend more money than they need to just to show off how much money they have.

Let's see, you can spend $0 and get a Blackberry 7 device or $199 and get a Blackberry 10....

And we're surprised that they sell more of the Blackberry 7's?
Ya, there Blackberry 10 devices are not that impressive. They do have some neat features but the lack of apps and development hurts specially for a phone priced at a premium price. Sure it is a premium feel but it needs more to be able to justify spen...

Absolutely Incredible

This company has been making solid garbage almost exclusively for the past 5 years (starting with the Storm.)

What's sad is they were among the first to get the smartphone 'right' - select a few features and make them work really well. In an era where a Windows Mobile phone would freeze and lock up mid-day or a Palm phone would require numerous hard resets, Blackberries simply always worked.

Now... sheesh. I guess it's testament to their reputation that they were able to survive this long, but they don't make a single competitive product- and haven't for years.

(My favorite line from their advertising is "We need tools not toys" in response to the iPhone, which is pretty ballsy when your signature email product keeps suf...

Thats alot of phones!

T-Mobile's retail of the Z10 is $531.99, based on total losses by BB of $950 million, that equals out to be 1.75 Million unsold phones.

Why would they manufacture so many? Wouldn't it make more sence to be slightly late to the game than jump the gun? Seems like they dug their own grave to me.
Blackberry has been dead for years now... The "late" 10 platform was simply a nail in the coffin. One poster here is right they emphasized the enterprise market for too long while others took advantage of the consumer market, most people ive worked ...
