Review: Motorola X for Sprint

Form Performance Basics Moto Apps Extras Wrap-Up Comments  17

Screen

The X's screen measures 4.7-inches across the diagonal and includes 1280 x 720 pixels. Nope, it's not a full HD screen. If that's a disappointment, take solace in the fact that the X's screen still offers rich detail and sharp text and images. There are no visible pixels. The X's screen uses AMOLED technology. It is easily used outdoors, but there's a noticeable blueing effect when the phone is tilted side to side. Viewing angles aren't as good as I'd like them to be, but colors look nice when viewed head on. It's a fine display, but not a great one.

Signal

The Moto X performed above par when compared to other Sprint devices in the metro NYC region. That means it connected calls a bit faster and had more consistent data speeds. Sprint's LTE network isn't yet available in New Jersey and Manhattan, so we were unable to test in on 4G. That said, it remained firmly attached to Sprint's CDMA 3G network in even the weakest conditions. The Moto X didn't drop or miss any calls. Data speeds over 3G are what they are.

Sound

I was impressed with the voice quality of the Moto X on Sprint's network. Much the same as the AT&T and Verizon versions, the Sprint variant offered clear calls in the earpiece that sometimes sounded overly sharp. Volume was quite sufficient when set all the way up. I had no trouble hearing people when in a bustling coffee shop. The speakerphone sounded very good, too. It offers plenty of volume and the clarity was on par with the earpiece. People with whom I spoke through the Moto X said I sounded good. Ringers and alert tones are loud enough to get your attention in most cases. The vibrate alert is excellent.

Battery

The X's curved backside houses a specially-designed 2200mAh battery. Motorola said it didn't want to waste the space created by the contours of the rear shell, so it created a new battery to fill the space. The Sprint Moto X's battery did a bit better than the ones inside the Verizon and AT&T versions, but this is probably because we were unable to test it on LTE 4G. That said, the X provided more than 15 hours on a charge, easily lasting from 7AM to 10 or 11PM with solid use. If you use it lightly, there's no question you can go an entire waking day with it. It consistently outlasted the Verizon model during side-by-side testing. You'll still need to charge it each night.
