EDGE Disappears From High End Motorolas

Motorola has been quietly revising the specs on many of the high end models they've announced but haven't yet released. Well publicized phones including new design models such as the PEBL and SLVR, as well as the E895 and A910 will no longer launch with EDGE data. They will be GPRS only. A Motorola spokesperson explained that the chipset Motorola choose for their top of the line models does not have a stable EDGE implementation, and does not meet Motorola's quality standards. It is too late for Motorola to swap out chips, so the company has been forced to disable EDGE on the new phones despite their high end placement in their lineup.

Bad for Moto, Great for Nokia, LG, Samsung

....Who will all be debuting EDGE-enabled products by years end, most noticably, Samsungs D600 on Cingular.

Phone Features: MP3 player, 2 meg camera, and um... oops?

This could possibly drop Motorola far behind in the cell race. Lets just hope they will be able to keep up for WCDMA.

Poor form by Moto.

How can you let this happen?

I mean I guess it is better than have bad EDGE but as long as EDGE has been around for them to not have it working well on their chipset is ridiculous.

I wonder though, could this have something to do with not wanting to have a US and European version of the handset since European handest don't have EDGE???
