Google Buys SkyBox for $500 Million

Google today said it has purchased SkyBox Imaging, a satellite company, for $500 million in cash. Google said it will use SkyBox's satellites, which can resolve objects on the ground of less than one meter, to keep Google Maps up to date with the latest images. It will also use SkyBox's satellites to provide internet and disaster relief when and where needed. The satellites can be targeted at specific locations to provide real-time views. The deal requires regulatory approval and Google did not say when it expects to close the acquisition. Google also uses cars to map streets around the world, and offers 360-degree street-level views to users of Google Maps.
