Sprint Launches EV-DO Services for Consumers

Sprint today launched Power Vision, a suite of consumer-oriented services built to leverage the company's growing EV-DO broadband-speed data network. The services include the country's first streaming, high-quality live TV and first over-the-air full-track music downloads. The first two phones available for Power Vision are the Samsung MM-A940 and Sanyo MM-9000, with more to follow by the end of the year. The new Sprint Music Store, powered by Groove Mobile, offers a catalog of over 250,000 songs from EMI, Sony BMG, Warner, and Universal. For $2.50, users get access to a copy of the song in WMA format for their PC, as well as a copy in AAC+ format for the phone that downloads in as little as 30 seconds over the EV-DO network. Power Vision starts at $15 per month, which includes streaming live TV from ABC News Now, a streaming music channel from Sirius, and unlimited web and data access. Premium packages at $20-25 per month include additional TV and music channels. Sprint's EV-DO network is expected to cover an estimated 130 million people by mid-November.

should I wait on phone?

I know that Sprint just came out with two new phones only one is Bluetooth. Sprint is suppose to come out with a razor type of phone with Bluetooth soon. I just bought a car with Bluetooth tech. and wanted to find out which phone would be best to use with Bluetooth. If both are the same I would like to have the Razor and if the Razor is coming out soon. So when, where, and how. Please help and advise.

Native Network?

The question is, how much of this EVDO will be provided from their native network, and how much is getting borrowed from Verizon? We all know Sprint doesnt have the large pocketbooks like Cingular and Verizon, so I'm guessing that that 130 million number will be by pulling off of Verizons towers. Am I right or wrong to assume that?

You can rest assured that this is Sprint's native network. Sprint has always prided themselves with the fact that they "built an all digital/all PCS network from the ground up". This is exactly what they have now, a native EVDO network from the ground...

You assume incorrectly. This is definitely on Sprint's CDMA network. Sprint (along w/their affiliates) has built their own network, "from the ground up." Rarely are you on anyone else's network w/Sprint. They do have digital roaming agreements (mostly...

Would love to hear some reviews

Realizing it just launched today, still would love to hear some reviews of how well/lousy the service is. Am especially interested in how well the TV channels look, as well as how many Sirius channels are streamed.

Cool but

Is DUN and OBEX enabled on these phones? I am looking at getting a new cell provider Sprint may be in the running if they don't do any stupid Bluetooth tricks like Verizon does.

Sprint is just as bad if not worse when it comes to bluetooth. Also i've read DUN will still be 1x anyways, ev-do will only be for the multi-media services.

Samsung will have 6 within the next 6 months (3 within 1 month... 1 of which is out now.)

That's pretty impressive. Apparently Sprint's been busy as bees. The Power Vision package covers subject matter even I like. Neat. Look out Verizon.

uh... no. The network REACHES that many people...poulation-wise. Pretty much they are saying "Our EV-DO coverage will be in a lot of areas in the country." No one carrier has 130 million subscribers. Cingular is #1 @ 50 million subscribers.
