Asian Carriers Announce EV-DO Revision A Launch Goal

KDDI, Japan's second largest carrier and only CDMA carrier, announced they would upgrade their EV-DO high speed network to Rev. A by the end of 2006. In June the carrier unveiled a plan to upgrade the network by the end of next year and then in 2007 begin work on integrating it with advanced wired networks already available in Japan. LG Telecom, a small South Korean carrier, today became the second carrier to set the end of 2006 as their Rev. A launch date, and the first Korean carrier to specify one. Sprint, Verizon and U.S.Cellular have each announced intentions to launch EV-DO Rev. A, but none have set a launch date as of yet. American networks typically launch new technologies a year or more after Asia and Europe, however Cingular is expected to be the first carrier to launch an HSDPA 3G network.
