Qualcomm today announced that it has agreed to acquire CSR for about $2.5 billion in cash. CSR, based in the U.K., develops technologies and products for what's referred to as the Internet of Things, as well as for the automotive and infotainment sectors. Qualcomm said the acquisition will help it expand its existing IoT and automotive businesses, as well as allow it to reach more potential customers. CSR invented and owns the technology behind the aptX Bluetooth profile, which improves the quality of stereo Bluetooth music playback. The deal is subject to regulatory and shareholder approval.
