WCDMA 900 Passes First Test

Nortel and Orange have just finished testing both 3G calls and data transfers in the 900 MHz spectrum used widely outside of North America. The tests used HSDPA equipment and were able to complete data transfers at up to 3.6 Mbps, the current speed limit for such equipment. While Europe and Asia has dedicated 3G spectrum, it is in the 2100 MHz and does not penetrate buildings or cover large undeveloped areas very well. 900 Mhz spectrum would allow carriers to provide 3G coverage to rural areas with far fewer cell sites. As more subscribers upgrade to 3G service, Orange and other carriers could clear off some 900 Mhz spectrum in order to launch a second band. The carrier has not announced when this may happen yet.
