Qualcomm To Work With Competing Mobile TV Standard
Feb 27, 2006, 4:58 PM by (staff)
Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs today admitted the company is working on DVB-H mobile TV chips. The chipmaker has not announced any models yet, but Jacobs said it was in Qualcomm's best interest to support the rival format because it could "boost uptake of mobile TV in general." Qualcomm has a rival to DVB-H known as FLO or MediaFLO which it will launch with Verizon in the US. To date, KDDI in Japan is the only other operator to sign onto Qualcomm's standard. DVB-H is gaining traction both in the US as well as abroad, buoyed by support from trials with Cingular and manufacturers such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson.
