Yahoo to Trim Yet More Products, Including Games
Mar 11, 2016, 12:41 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Yahoo today said it plans to further cut its array of products in order to gain control over costs and help it focus on core offerings. Yahoo Games is among several services to be discontinued. The Games site and channel will go dark May 13. Yahoo Livetext will be shut down at the end of March. Livetext allowed Yahoo to experiment with user experiences across its product line. More Yahoo media properties will cease publishing, too, such as Yahoo Astrology in the U.K., France, Germany, Spain, and India. Last, Yahoo plans to discontinue some developer tools, including BOSS JSON Search API, BOSS Hosted Search, and the BOSS Placefinder and Placespotter APIs. Yahoo said developers should rely wholly on the tools within the Yahoo Mobile Developer Suite. Yahoo wants to focus on a handful of key properties, including mail, search, tumblr, news, sports, finance, and lifestyle, as it reigns in its finances. The company is in the process of laying off about 15% of its staff.
