Nokia Will Have WiMax Handsets By 2008

Nokia today announced they are joining Motorola, Samsung and others and will begin working on WiMax hardware. The company says they will have WiMax base stations on the 2.5 GHz band, which is the frequency Sprint will use for its WiMax deployment, by late 2007. Nokia will follow up with European base stations working on 3.5 GHz as well as handsets in 2008. Nokia was not named as one of Sprint Nextel's 4G launch partners, however today's announce may indicate that they will join Motorola, Samsung and Intel on Sprint after the initial few cities are rolled out.

WiMax != CDMA
WiMax is far easier to deploy than conventional cell towers, so Nokia may be planning on making WiMax-only handsets in the hope that Sprint (or some other carrier) will deploy it widely enough to make those handsets practical.
