Sony Ericsson Buys UIQ From Symbian

Sony Ericsson today announced it has reached a deal to buy UIQ, the Symbian-based interface that powers its smartphones. It is likely other members of the Symbian consortium pushed for this sale since Sony Ericsson is the last remaining major licensee of UIQ. Motorola, BenQ and even Nokia have used it in the past. After the sale, each major Symbian manufacturer (Nokia, DoCoMo, Sony Ericsson) will be responsible for its own interface, leaving Symbian to focus solely on the underlying OS. Before the merger with Sony, Ericsson sold UIQ to Symbian so that the company could provide an interface for potential licensees who did not have the desire or resources to develop their own.
