Verizon Buys Network To Cover West Virginia

Verizon today closed a deal to purchase West Virginia Wireless for an undisclosed amount. WV Wireless covers the major population centers of the state with a GSM network including Charleston, Huntington and other towns. If the deal is approved by regulators, Verizon will build a CDMA network to replace current coverage. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2007.

So far the two, well actually three, people who have commented on this development have bashed West Virginia. Have you ever lived here? Have you ever really investigated the CDMA coverage in WV? Have you read up on anything in WV about wireless? Let me help you folks out. Other than the quickly diminishing Analog service in WV (extreme rural markets now), CDMA is quite dominant when it comes to wireless coverage. GSM being second, and IDEN (Nextel) a distant third. In this specific instance the purchase of WV Wireless (a spin off MVNO GSM carrier)will not really grow the CDMA coverage in southern WV at all. What Does This Do For Marshall University...
I know WV Wireless was Marshall University's official cellular provider. Will this mean they will have to update all of thsoe towers on the dorms and give everyone new phones because of course GSM and CDMA are 2 different technologies.

Is West Virginia Wireless's customer's going to become Verizon customers then? If so Anyone have some numbers for that carrier's customer base? Just curious if that will through Verizon on top with total customers again. If not they will get ther ethe good old fashioned way eventually anyway.
