Verizon is launching the Kyocera DuraXV Extreme, an update to the rugged DuraXV LTE flip phone that launched in 2017. The new model is washable (using a mild dish cleaner) and can be disinfected using alcohol (70% solution) or cleaning wipes. It's also certified Non-Incendive Class I Div 2 (provides protection in environments with flammable gases, vapors and mists not normally present in explosive concentration). It's also rated IP68 for dust and water, and Mil-Std 810G for dust, shock, vibration, temperature extremes, blowing rain, low pressure, solar radiation, salt fog, humidity, freeze-thaw and icing/freezing rain. The DuraXV Extreme also has a larger battery and faster processor than its predecessor, and includes positioning technology from Skyhook that provides precise location accuracy even when offline. It has dual front-facing speakers, dual-mic noice cancellation, and HD Voice for a loud (100dB+) speakerphone and clear calls. It also has Wi-Fi, a mobile hotspot function, USB-C, and a 5 megapixel camera. A non-camera version is also available. Its software is based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project) but it isn't designed to run Android apps. But it can be managed with Verizon's MDM platform. The DuraXV Extreme is available from Verizon starting today for $240, or $10/month for two years.
