Boost Mobile Gives up on Building Its Own Network

As part of its recent transaction with AT&T, EchoStar has announced that "elements of Boost Mobile's radio access network (RAN) will be decommissioned over time." Boost spent the past several years building its own nationwide 5G network largely from scratch, an enormous undertaking. Going forward, Boost will operate as what it calls a "hybrid MNO", with "Boost Mobile's cloud-native 5G core connected to AT&T's leading nationwide network" (with secondary coverage still provided by T-Mobile). So while Boost will maintain some of its own central mobile network infrastructure, that will not necessarily include its own towers. The sale of Boost to Dish/EchoStar — to create a fourth full national mobile network — was originally a condition for US Department of Justice approval of T-Mobile's merger with Sprint.
