Verizon Wireless Obtains 700MHz Licenses
Nov 14, 2008, 3:08 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Today the FCC gave the final green light to Verizon Wireless after it bid $4.7 billion to acquire large blocks of 700MHz spectrum earlier this year. Google had been hoping that stricter open access rules would be attached to the licenses, but the FCC did not agree. These new licenses result in Verizon exceeding the 95-megahertz limit in 17 markets, but the FCC decided the new spectrum won't harm Verizon's competitors in those markets. Verizon will, however, have to divest 10MHz of spectrum in New Jersey.
