Motorola Lays Off Thousands from Mobile Device Unit
Jan 14, 2009, 5:00 PM by Eric M. Zeman
Motorola announced that it is taking further steps to reduce costs and reorganize its business. As part of the reorganization, it is planning to eliminate 3,000 positions associated with the Mobile Devices business and approximately 1,000 positions associated with corporate functions and other business units. The job reductions will begin almost immediately. These layoffs, plus those already announced in December 2008, should save Motorola about $1.5 billion for the 2009 fiscal year. Additionally, Motorola reported its initial fourth-quarter results, which show that the company shipped about 19 million handsets with revenues ranging between $7.0 and $7.2 billion.
