GSMA Pushes for Standardizing Cell Phone Chargers

Today the GSMA and a group of 17 mobile operators and handset manufacturers announced plans to introduce a standard for a universal charger for mobile phones. The goal is to force the mobile industry to adopt a common format for mobile phone chargers. The GSMA hopes this initiative will lead to less electricity consumption, as well as reducing the need to provide a new charger with each new phone. It also believes it will lead to less confusion for consumers. Some of the companies supporting the initiative include AT&T, Motorola, Qualcomm, Samsung, and T-Mobile.

Don't we pretty much already have this?
Isn't micro USB the new standard? Or are we talking even stricter standards with things like limited power consumption, auto shut-off, etc.?
microUSB better be the standard they want. We don't need funky charger standards, HTC, that mean yet another kind of USB cable to manufacture. microUSB is fine enough. If it gets any smaller it will be a razor with wires.
