Researchers Create Battery that Can Charge in Seconds

A team of researchers at MIT have come up with a new way to recharge lithium ion batteries that could allow them to charge in seconds or minutes rather than hours. As lithium ion batteries act today, the ions need to travel through microscopic tunnels to create the charge. If the ions aren't correctly positioned near the mouth of the tunnels, they don't enter the tunnel and can't produce a charge. The MIT researchers have essentially created an easier way for the ions to reach and enter these tunnels, which they are calling a "beltway". This method for charging means batteries don't lose their capacity to charge over time. It also allows for faster charging, and smaller batteries that carry the same capacity. Smaller batteries can lead to smaller, lighter battery-powered devices.

Automotive Application

One of the strikes against purely electric cars is battery charge time. If they can get charge time comparable to filling the gas tank, it would be a major step.

The smaller battery with the same charge is also important for automobiles.

This is great news for companies like Tesla. Let's hope the oil companies and auto manufacturers don't nix this like they did the EVs in the late nineties.

y cant they do this on cellphone?

Different type of battery. Those are NiMH, not Lithium.

So then...

...in the news today [in the future], eight major device manufacturers have recalled batteries on their devices, because of a risk of exploding when charging up. Time has repeated itself again, as the Korean manufacturers, aggressive at cutting costs, have failed to include failsafe mechanisms on the new Lithium-ION batteries, that can charge up in seconds.
