The Samsung Craft is the first LTE phone on the U.S. market, available on Metro PCS. Is it the herald of great things to come?

The Samsung Craft is the first LTE phone in the country, available on MetroPCS' burgeoning LTE network. It may use the latest networking technology, but this is no smartphone. Instead, the Craft is looking to entice MetroPCS fans to upgrade to a faster model. Is the contract-free carrier missing the boat with this QWERTY slider?

Thanks for the review

I felt it was unbiased and useful. The info was complete and consice bashing.

metropcs is still trying things and I think they are going to stick around, not because of gimmicks but because they are actually trying to be competitive.

Even if the Craft is short, its just a stepping stone on a long long path... to infiniti and beyond 😁

After talking with MetroPCS

I talked to MetroPCS about this phone before I wrote the review. The strategy behind it is fascinating.

First, MetroPCS isn't focused on new customers with this phone. They seem to be thinking about their existing base. They imagine folks who already bought the Samsung TouchWIZ 1xRTT folks they offered will be thrilled with this phone. It's got faster networking and the fantastic AMOLED display. Those customers won't mind the interface.

Second, LTE is MetroPCS' 3G. Their network performance is disappointing if you've used T-Mobile's HSPA+, Clear's WiMAX or even AT&T's and Verizon Wireless' networks on a very good day. But if you've been using 1xRTT for the last couple years, it isn't so bad.

Third, this is the most expensive phon...

Yeah that sounds right. I have a Huawei m750 and while the metro web browser on that sucks I don't have a problem with the speed that web pages open up. If this wasn't coming I would be happy to get a Caliber. For make needs as of now I don't need...

Samsung Craft

Judging by the review performed by our good man Philip Berne, it seems that metroPCS wants the bragging rights of being the nation's first LTE carrier at any cost. As mentioned on the review, the Craft is just feature phone (and a poor one too). I seriously believe that the folks at metro simply want to sell a phone under the 4G "brand you want to call it that) just to bring more costumers to their network without having to really deliver a true 4G speed to their devices. This unit does exactly what they want: a high-priced model that gives the customer an idea of what is like to have a fast network. MetroPCS knows that with this device there is no real stress on its network. No tethering, no real browsing experience, no platform on the devi...

i agree, sounds like a slightly watered down epic. with 1x? strange, but then again metro did jump from 2g to 4g. i wish they would have taken a lil more time with their first device on lte, and perhaps the newtwork its self. espcially when it tests ...
