LG and Nortel have successfully demonstrated the world's first live handoff of an active data session while moving between CDMA and LTE networks. The demonstration used Nortel network gear and a near-commercial LG data modem. The technology is expected to deployed by carriers such as Verizon Wireless, allowing users to move seamlessly between new LTE coverage areas and CDMA EVDO-only coverage areas without dropping their data connection. LTE will offer higher data rates than current CDMA EVDO networks. LG developed its prototype "M13" LTE/CDMA data modem in collaboration with Verizon Wireless and Qualcomm, and plans to bring a similar product to market in 2010.
