The GSMA today endorsed IMB (Integrated Mobile Broadcast) as a new 3GPP standard. IMB is designed primarily for broadcast of live TV and other high-volume video content, similar to MediaFLO and DVB-H technologies. It is based in part on WCDMA technology, and includes the ability to hand off a live video stream between unicast over WCDMA and broadcast over IMB. It is designed primarily to work in the mostly unused unpaired TDD radio bands that were auctioned off together with 2100 MHz 3G spectrum in Europe.
