Mobile DTV Standard Approved, Samsung Intros Mobile DTV Chip

The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) has approved the Mobile DTV mobile broadcast standard. The standard will allow mobile devices such as phones and laptops to receive free-to-air digital television that is broadcast by local stations. Devices with Mobile DTV receivers will be able to tune in and watch local programming, and also receive emergency alerts and even some on-demand content. The Open Mobile Video Coalition, which is an industry association made up from 800 broadcast stations, says that it is preparing Mobile DTV programming for broadcast. In conjunction with the ATSC announcement, Samsung introduced its first Mobile DTV chip, which it expects will be used in devices such as mobile phones, car-mounted televisions and portable media players.

Does this mean I can watch CBS or some thing like that on a phone? What about putting this stuff on a laptop?

This is bad news for Qualcomm's Media Flo service. People are going to stop paying for something that they can get for free. Plus there are more channels on DTV OTA broadcasting than mediaflo. The only way they may survive is by offering more premium ...
